FAQS

What is quarter sawn?

In a quarter sawn board the growth rings are at 90° to the face.  In many species including Oak, Beech, Cherry and Maple this produces wood with prominent ray fleck and/or wavy grain.  Quarter sawn wood is generally more stable than flat sawn and is sought out for use in furniture and musical instruments.

What is flat sawn?

In flat sawn lumber the growth rings are 30° or less to the face. The grain will often swirl and produce wavy patterns sometimes refered to as landscape figure.
